To use TextPipe...

  1. On the Filters to Apply tab, tell TextPipe what to do by choosing filters from the Convert, Add, Remove, Email, Replace, Special, Map and Restrict menus
  2. Drag and drop your files or folders to anywhere in TextPipe's window. They will get added to the Files to Process tab
  3. Click the [Go] button.

Testing filters first...

You can test a filter by

  • Pasting text into the Trial Run Area, then clicking the [Trial Run] button

    OR

  • Clicking the File Output filter at the base of the filter tree, ensure that Test Mode is checked, then click the [Go] button.

Designing filters...

TextPipe's filter list is built up from a series of modular filters, each performing a small task. For example, the task of extracting email addresses from a group of files might look like this:

  1. Email menu\Extract email addresses - returns one email address per line
  2. Special menu\Merge - merge all the email addresses into one big file
  3. Special menu\Sort (case insensitive, removing duplicates)
  4. Remove menu\Remove matching lines (to remove your own email address, or known bad email addresses)

To use these addresses in Outlook, you must convert them from one email address per line to a semi-colon separated list of email addresses.

  5. Convert Menu\End of line characters (convert from DOS format to the string ';')

To design a filter, you may have to reduce the problem down to a series of simpler steps. Use Special menu\Comment filters to document your design.
